Meat is part of my culture.
THE VEGAN HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.
Food is more than fuel. We get it.
Meals connect people to family, history, religion and community. Pretending that doesn’t matter would miss what food actually means to people. But respecting a tradition and asking questions about it can happen at the same time. Traditions change all the time, and people within the same culture often disagree about how. Sometimes the meaning of a dish can survive a change in ingredients. Sometimes it really can’t, and that’s a real tension. Nobody is ranking cultures here, or claiming one menu fits everyone. Tradition doesn’t have to be off-limits, and it doesn’t have to be thrown away.
THE KEY DISTINCTION
Respect the meaning of a tradition, and leave room to question it.
